The character of “Othello” numbers among the most famous roles for black actors in the Western world, but the figure is nearly unknown in Africa. Othello is a European creation that functions like a ritual in which the foreigner is repeatedly reconstructed. Precisely this phenomenon is the focus of attention for the visual artist Knut Klaßen and the theater director Monika Gintersdorfer in “Othello, c’est qui.” Two performers meander through a conglomeration of various cultural perspectives. They initially confront ordinary and trivial things before the plot runs its unavoidable course, conjuring up conflicts such as honor and violence.
Monika Gintersdorfer is familiar to Munich’s audiences from her collaboration with the Kammerspiele. She and Knut Klaßen have worked together since 2005. The two artists are primarily interested in projects in which life strategies and forms of expression are the focal point for their multinational team.
