This art project in the public arena aims to attract hitherto unimagined attention to the art of dance. A further objective is to reclaim the format of the advertising clip for a new - purely artistic - purpose. To this end artists from all over the world are invited to produce short artistic films of maximally 60 seconds each that are called “Choreographic Captures”. These will be shown in a public medial space (cinemas, Internet) in order to give dance the attention that is increasingly being denied by the general economy.

By contrast with advertising film spots, Choreographic Captures do not have any advertising agenda at all. Instead they are characterised by their own artistic aesthetics and contexts, representing a “counter-programme” quite detached from any commercial use. Choreography here in the broadest sense of the word is understood as an arrangement of movement in space and time, whereby the movement need not be restricted to human bodies but can also involve any other object.

A distinction is made between two categories for the prizes. In addition to cinema prizes that should allow distribution and screening of selected choreographic captures on up to 2000 screens, there are also cash prizes for the artistically most valuable choreographic captures. Our partners from the film sector will convert your format into digital formats and/or 35 mm film necessary for cinema screenings. In addition to screenings in Germany, further showings in France, Spain, Switzerland and other countries are designed.

The unsuspecting viewers will thus be confronted with art in a place where this is least expected. By the side of an advertising format oriented purely to commercial goals they will see an autonomous work of art that breaks through traditional patterns of perception and challenges new seeing habits – under the slogan:
Art for those who didn’t ask for it!

Furthermore, a selection of the Choreographic Captures submitted are beeing presented on the Internet platform www.choreographiccaptures.org.

It is also possible to download information about the artists and projects at this site. Furthermore, all Choreographic Captures will be made accessible to a broader public via common forums and sites (such as e.g. myspace and youtube).

Deadline for submissions for the third Choreographic Captures Competition will be on April 30, 2010
