The NATIONAL PERFORMANCE NETWORK (NPN) was founded in 1999 by six German dance organizers to create a long-term support structure for contemporary dance in Germany and to make accessible to larger, trans-regional audiences productions which have already been created. The German federal government and the several German federal states support this network, which is unique in Europe within the framework of support for touring performances. Support for co-productions began in 2005 thanks to patronage from the Federal Cultural Foundation within Tanzplan Deutschland.
