For almost three decades now Rosemary Butcher has been considered one of the most innovative British choreographers. She has been teaching at a variety of different universities and schools in England since 1969. Her most recent assignment was as Head of Choreography at the Laban Centre for Movement and Dance in London. Her work owes much to her stay in New York at the beginning of the 1970s, where she encountered the "Judson Church Movement" at its peak. In 1976 Butcher presented their ideas in London's Serpentine Gallery.
Since then Butcher has developed her own language of motion and choreographic form on the basis of concept art, pure movement and complex handling of space, and has influenced three generations of British choreographers with this (including especially Sue McLennan, Russell Maliphant, Laurie Booth and Jonathan Burrows). With her determination to remain an independent artist, her cross-disciplinary cooperation works that she uses for the choreographic process and her preference for presenting her works outside theatres, she has been an influential trail-blazer for contemporary British dance. Her works "SCAN" and "STILL-SLOW-DIVIDED" have been greatly applauded by critics at home and abroad. Most recently her solo "Hidden Voices" was nominated for the Place Prize.
