In “IN MEDEAS RES”, choreographer Chris Haring and his dance company Liquid Loft embark on an intense journey into the depths of the human psyche. Inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini's film “Medea” (1969) starring the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, the choreography explores not only the external conflicts of the mythological figure, but above all her inner turmoil, fears and limitations. ‘IN MEDEAS RES’ establishes the split personality as a survival strategy – not as pathos, but as an existential state in which human inner life asserts itself against external and internal influences. In a double casting of the title role, performers Hannah Timbrell and Dong Uk Kim embody different psychological aspects that powerfully demand their right to be lived.
Patrizia Ruthensteiner's objects are sculptures, sound bodies and physical extensions that expand the layers of meaning on stage, giving it an installation-like yet volatile character. Enacted by the choreographed double figure, the objects become a reflection of a fractured psyche. Here, Medea radicalises herself, suffers through her loneliness and meanders between masquerade and authenticity, dissolution and integrity.
The Austrian performance company Liquid Loft was founded in 2005 by choreographer Chris Haring together with musician Andreas Berger, dancer Stephanie Cumming and dramaturge Thomas Jelinek. Inspired by science fiction literature and cyborg theory, their work explores how our perception and bodies are changing through visual media and the everyday use of technology. By deconstructing dance movement material and shifting acoustic levels, Liquid Loft opens up new choreographic fields of action and combines contemporary dance with other art forms. Their work has received numerous awards in the fields of performance and film, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
