Smart devices, algorithms, and digital control systems have long since become embedded in our tissues, organs, and movements. Technology no longer appears as an external tool, but as a total institution within the body.
The surveillance devices we have voluntarily opted for – our smart devices – track our every move, voice, glance and touch. The algorithms that power them have become better at fulfilling our supposed desires than we are. But at the same time, they also fulfil our greatest fears. Technology is a total institution that we carry within us. Psychopolitical reward and control systems are reflected in somatic processes.
Jan Rozman’s performance “wetware” combines stand-up comedy, choreography, and theory into a dark yet humorous self-examination in the age of surveillance capitalism. Navigating between Elon Musk, Byung-Chul Han’s psychopolitical theses, and his own body, Rozman embarks on a journey through the pressure to optimize, exhaustion, and the feeling of never being enough.
With dark humor and choreographic precision, “wetware” portrays the human being as a network of smart devices – always activated, controlled, and trapped in the cycle between ability and obligation.
Jan Rozman (b. 1991) is a freelance performer, choreographer, improviser, and performance artist. He lives and works between Ljubljana and Berlin. In his artistic practice, he explores expanded bodies, material semiotics, ruptures, errors, ecology, imagination, (science) fiction, and humor, seeking contemporary performative forms of expression for the post-internet and Anthropocene eras.
He attended the Secondary School of Contemporary Dance in Ljubljana and subsequently completed a degree in choreography at SNDO in Amsterdam, as well as the Solo/Dance/Authorship master’s program at HZT (UdK) Berlin. He is also a trained physical therapist.
His works include, among others, “Fur”, “Feathers”, “Scale”, “Glitch”, “Invitation”, “Bird Dementia”, “The Decision Guillotine”, “Senzasenso”, and “Thinging”. These works have been presented both in Slovenia and internationally, including at the Ukrep Festival, Front@, the Slovenian Dance Platform Nacionala, SPHA, and the Something Raw Festival.
In 2019, Jan Rozman received the Ksenija Hribar Award for promising choreographers, presented by the Slovenian Contemporary Dance Association.
