As part of ACCESS TO DANCE 2026 – organized by JOINT ADVENTURES – Marta Navaridas and Alexander Deutinger invite you to an extraordinary guided tour of the State Museum of Egyptian Art (SMÄK) in Munich. “Emancipation of Wonder” offers an unconventional perspective on the collection – based on the thoughts and descriptions of children aged 8 to 10.
In preparatory workshops, the artists – blindfolded – are guided through the museum by the pupils. The children describe the architecture, exhibition spaces, and exhibits from their own perspective; their observations are recorded and transcribed. This material forms the basis for an artistic museum tour for adults that challenges conventional forms of art education and allows visitors to experience the works with curiosity, imagination, and disarming directness.
The project explores different approaches to art mediation. While museum discourse is often perceived as exclusive or difficult to access, this raises the question of how art can be communicated without reducing its complexity. “Emancipation of Wonder” proposes a new approach to this: The children’s poetic, humorous, and often surprising interpretations invite the audience to question ingrained ways of seeing and to experience art beyond established interpretations.
Marta Navaridas (San Sebastián, Spain) and Alexander Deutinger (Salzburg, Austria) have collaborated as choreographers and performance makers since 2007. Both studied translation before training in dance and choreography. Their work combines text and movement and has been presented in theatres, festivals, museums, galleries and public space. Since 2020, they have been developing the series “Emancipation of Wonder” in collaboration with contemporary art museums.
