“How can I move my body and my story in such a way that the traces of those who have been erased, overlooked, ignored, or forgotten become audible, visible, and tangible?” – Dorothée Munyaneza
As always, it all begins with encounters: the experience with the philosopher Elsa Dorlin, the encounter with her text “I, You, We: I, Tituba, and the Ontology of the Trace,” as well as with the character Tituba from the novel “I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem” by the writer Maryse Condé. Condé gave a voice to a Black woman and alleged witch from the Salem witch trials – a figure whose existence and story had nearly been erased.
The performance sets out in search of the traces of those people who were disenfranchised, silenced, and forgotten through colonialism and slavery. At the center is the body as a living archive: a place where memories, stories, and experiences are preserved and passed on. Dance, voice, and song create a space in which absence becomes visible and silence audible.
The result is a “collective solo” that interweaves personal and historical experiences. The body becomes a vessel of memory and resistance – at once vulnerable and powerful, individual and communal. The choreography moves between Africa, Europe, the Americas, and the Caribbean, opening up a hybrid space filled with traces, dreams, and ruptures.
In collaboration with visual artist Stéphanie Coudert and musician Khyam Allami, an atmospheric production combining light, sound, and movement is taking shape. It brings to light what is missing – and serves as a reminder that remembrance, healing, and visibility are an ongoing process.
Dorothée Munyaneza is a multidisciplinary artist who combines music, song, text, and movement to explore memory, the body, and social fractures. Drawing on real-life stories, she creates spaces for resonance and encounter. Her artistic work is shaped by her cultural heritage in Rwanda, 14 years spent in London, and her current life divided between Paris and Marseille.
A singer since childhood, she studied music and social sciences in Canterbury and began working closely with François Verret in 2006. This was followed by collaborations with artists such as Robyn Orlin, Rachid Ouramdane, Nan Goldin, Alain Buffard, and Ben LaMar Gay.
In 2013, she founded the Compagnie Kadidi in Marseille. Her works include Samedi Détente (2014), Unwanted (2017), Mailles (2020), a capella (2022), Toi, moi, Tituba… (2023), umuko (2024), and Version(s) (2025).
In 2020, she translated Hopelessly Devoted by Kae Tempest; her production Inconditionnelles was created for the Bouffes du Nord in Paris and premiered in 2024.
Dorothée Munyaneza was an artist-in-residence at the Théâtre de la Ville – Paris from 2018 to 2021 and collaborates with renowned institutions such as the Théâtre National de Chaillot, the Maison de la Danse, and the Biennale de la danse in Lyon. In 2024, she received the SALAVISA European Dance Award presented by the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, JOINT ADVENTURES in Munich, and seven other international festivals and organizers.
